Elderly Client Services
Our Private Client team specialises in legal issues affecting the older client. Alongside their expertise in wills and estate planning, they also advise on:
- Lasting powers of attorney and advance decisions relating to medical care
- Court of Protection matters which includes Deputyship applications, how to manage a person's affairs as a Deputy, and other applications such as applying to the Court for a will to be made for someone who is unable to do so themselves
- Planning for and general advice regarding care fees, including disputes about funding
- Protection issues such as how to prevent financial abuse of vulnerable people, or how to deal with it in the unfortunate event it occurs.
Helen Newson is an accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly, a national network of qualified lawyers specialising in this area of work. She and her colleague Alison Short act not only as advisers but also as professional attorneys and deputies for people who are unable to manage their own affairs and have no-one able to take on this role for them.
The team has many years' experience in working with clients who are vulnerable, whether because of frailty in old age, illness or bereavement. Whilst being alert to the pressures that can bring, they take great care to ensure everything is explained in a straightforward manner and that the interests of the older person are put first.
Helen and Alison regularly give talks to local groups about their work and how solicitors who specialise in this area can help people later in life and the people caring for them.
